The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) has two separate ways it can help with cleaning and housekeeping. Which one fits depends on your Veteran Card and whether your needs come from a service-related condition.

Pathway 1: Veterans' Home Care (VHC)

DVA says you may be eligible for VHC if you:

How to apply: call the VHC Assessment Agency on 1300 550 450. An assessor does a phone assessment and, if services are approved, allocates them to a VHC service provider. VHC can have service limits and co-payments; DVA's VHC page lists the current ones.

Pathway 2: Household Services (compensation)

If you can no longer manage household tasks you used to do because of an accepted service-related injury or disease, you may be able to claim Household Services. A DVA delegate decides whether the help is reasonably required. You apply with DVA's form, by email to [email protected] or by post.

What the help can include

DVA lists house cleaning, dishwashing, washing clothes and linen, ironing, bed-making, unaccompanied shopping from a list, meal preparation and unaccompanied bill paying.

Not sure which applies to you?

Call 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372). DVA can tell you whether your condition is accepted as service-related and which option suits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay anything for Veterans' Home Care?

VHC can involve co-payments and service limits. DVA's Veterans' Home Care page lists the current amounts, or ask the assessor when you call 1300 550 450.

Can DVA pay for laundry and ironing?

Yes. DVA lists washing clothes and linen, and ironing, among the household tasks it can help with, subject to eligibility and assessment.

What's the difference between VHC and Household Services?

VHC is for eligible card holders who need help with daily activities. Household Services is compensation for veterans who can't do household tasks because of an accepted service-related injury or disease.

Already approved, or still working it out? Call or book and we'll explain how it works with your provider.
