Does the NDIS Pay for Cleaning?
How household cleaning fits into an NDIS plan, which providers you can use, and how to make the case at your plan review.
The short answer: it can. The NDIS lists help with everyday tasks like cleaning under its core supports. Whether your plan pays for it depends on your disability, your goals and what's written in your plan.
Where cleaning sits in your plan
The NDIS describes the Assistance with Daily Life part of your core supports budget as funding you can use to hire support workers for everyday tasks such as cleaning, yard maintenance, cooking and personal care. Core budgets are flexible: the NDIS says you can use the total amount across and within the support categories, as long as the supports fit the NDIS rules and your plan.
"Reasonable and necessary"
Cleaning is funded when it's related to your disability. It helps to show:
- how your disability affects your ability to clean (an occupational therapist's report is often the strongest evidence);
- why family or housemates can't reasonably do it for you;
- how help with cleaning supports your goals, for example living independently or keeping a safe, healthy home.
Be specific at your planning meeting. "I can't bend to clean the bathroom floor and fatigue lasts days after vacuuming" is more useful than "I need help around the house".
Which cleaners you can use
- NDIA-managed (agency-managed): the NDIS says you can only use registered providers.
- Plan-managed: your plan manager pays invoices, and you can generally use registered and unregistered providers.
- Self-managed: you pay and claim, with the widest choice of providers.
Prices are capped by the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, which are updated regularly, so ask your provider or plan manager for the current rate rather than relying on an old figure.
What usually is and isn't covered
Usually covered when it's linked to your disability: vacuuming and mopping, bathrooms, kitchens, bed-making, laundry and rubbish. Usually not covered from this budget: repairs, painting and cleaning unrelated to your needs.
Making it work in practice
- Check your plan for core supports funding and how it's managed.
- Talk to your support coordinator or plan manager about the hours you need.
- Agree a service agreement with your provider: tasks, frequency and price.
- Keep the same cleaner where you can; familiarity matters.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use any cleaner with NDIS funding?
It depends how your plan is managed. NDIA-managed funding can only be used with registered providers; plan-managed and self-managed participants can generally also use unregistered providers. Check with your plan manager.
Does NDIS pay for laundry?
Laundry can be part of help with household tasks where it's reasonable and necessary for your disability. See our NDIS laundry page for how pickup and delivery works.
What evidence helps get cleaning funded?
Evidence linking your disability to the need, such as an occupational therapist's report, plus a clear explanation of why others in the household can't reasonably help.
