Household Cleaning Know-How

How Often Should You Actually Clean Your Carpets?

Carpet cleaning is one of the most searched cleaning questions in Australia, and for good reason — most people are either overdoing it or leaving it way too long.

We get asked this constantly, and the honest answer is: it depends on your household, not a fixed number stuck on a calendar. But there is a real range worth knowing, because leaving carpet too long between proper cleans doesn't just look bad — it actually shortens the life of the carpet itself.

The actual numbers

As a baseline, most carpet manufacturers and industry bodies land on professional steam cleaning every 12 months for an average household. But "average" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Here's a more useful breakdown:

High-traffic zones — hallways, in front of the couch, the bit right inside the front door — wear and soil faster than the rest of the room, so it's not unreasonable to give those areas more frequent attention even if the rest of the carpet's holding up fine.

Vacuuming isn't optional in between

Steam cleaning is the deep reset, but it's not meant to be your only line of defence. Regular vacuuming (weekly for most homes, more if you've got pets or kids) is what stops dirt and grit from working its way down into the pile and acting like sandpaper on the fibres every time someone walks across it. That's honestly the single biggest thing that shortens carpet lifespan — not lack of steam cleaning, but grit sitting untouched and grinding away at the fibres underfoot.

Stains: speed matters more than technique

Nearly every carpet stain disaster we get called out for started the same way — something spilled, someone rubbed at it with whatever was closest, and by the time it's noticed properly it's set in. A few things that genuinely help:

DIY versus professional — where's the actual line?

A rental carpet cleaner or a decent spot-cleaning kit is genuinely useful for surface maintenance and fresh spills. What it usually can't match is the extraction power of a professional hot-water steam clean, which pulls dirt, dust mites and allergens out from deep in the pile and backing rather than just the top layer. If you're managing a household with pets, allergies, or you're coming up to an end of lease inspection, a professional clean is worth the money — a lot of rental agreements specifically require it, and DIY carpet cleaners rarely get the result an inspector is looking for.

If it's just general upkeep on a low-traffic carpet, a good DIY clean between professional visits can genuinely stretch things out. Just don't let "I did it myself last month" talk you out of the deep clean when it's actually due — surface cleaning and deep extraction aren't the same job.

The quick version

Vacuum weekly, deal with spills the second they happen, and get a professional steam clean somewhere between every 3 and 18 months depending on pets, allergies and foot traffic. If in doubt, err toward more often — it's a lot cheaper than replacing the carpet early because grit and grime were left to do their damage.

Will steam cleaning shrink or damage my carpet?

A professional hot-water extraction clean, done properly, shouldn't shrink or damage carpet — it's specifically designed for it. Problems usually come from over-wetting with a cheap DIY machine or leaving carpet to dry too slowly, which can affect the backing. A professional clean uses proper extraction to pull most of the moisture straight back out.

Can I steam clean my own carpet with a rental machine?

Yes, and it's a reasonable option for routine upkeep between professional cleans, especially for surface-level dirt. Rental machines generally don't have the suction power of professional equipment though, so they leave more moisture and residue behind, which is why they're better as a top-up than a full replacement for a professional deep clean.

Do I really need my carpets professionally cleaned before I move out of a rental?

Many Australian lease agreements specifically require it, particularly if you had pets during the tenancy, and property managers will often check for it against the entry condition report. Even where it's not explicitly required, a professionally cleaned carpet is one of the easier ways to avoid a dispute over your bond.

We do professional carpet steam cleans as a standalone service or bundled with a regular or end of lease clean.
